What to do if baby falls off the bed

My baby fell off the bed – What should i do?

No no, do not worry! It didn’t happen to my baby. Well, it did happen to her a long while back but not recently. But few days back I got a call from a friend whose 8 months old baby had fallen from the bed and she was beside herself with guilt and worry. It so happened that she dozed off while feeding at night and her baby who has just discovered crawling somehow managed to cross her and next thing she saw was the baby lying on the floor crying her heart out. I’m sure it sounds commonplace to seasoned parents, but for a first-timer it is nightmarish. I still remember the first time it happened to my daughter, I just could not sleep anymore for next few months and would check on her many times a night.

Other’s assurances don’t help much in such a case but it is always good to be prepared for such an eventuality. Most of the times babies do not get hurt much as their skulls are much softer than adults and thus able to absorb the impact. It is more the shock of the fall than any major damage.

What to do if your baby rolls off the bed?

  • If your baby falls on head, it is important to observe her carefully. Look for any bumps or swellings on head. If the baby seems OK after a little while and sleeps again, let the baby sleep.
  • Take good feel of your baby’s full body for any lumps, check the eyes carefully whether they are able to focus or not.
  • If the baby cries excessively or becomes unconscious, take her to the doctor immediately.
  • If baby develops fever or vomits, it is time for the emergency room.
  • Be observant for next couple of days for any unusual lethargy or drowsiness. Mention this to baby’s doctor.
  • Take the baby to doctor without delay if there are any convulsions or seizures.

Precautions to reduce risk of falling by infants

Infants and toddlers are prone to fall off beds, cribs, couches, changing tables and so on. You can take a few precautions to cut the risk though.

  • Make the baby sleep on the cot with rails at a safe height.
  • Once the baby is sitting and trying to pull up, adjust the mattress to the lowest level on the crib.
  • If baby sleeps on a regular bed, do carpeting in the room to cut down the impact if it happens.
  • Put safety gates on stairs once the baby starts crawling and exploring.

Above all be calm and do not be too hard on yourself. I am yet to meet a mom whose baby has not taken a tumble during those early months. Remember, if you panic your child will also pick up the vibes and will be harder to console.

What is the right way to burp a baby after feeding?

How to burp a baby after feeding?

What is the right way to burp a baby after feed?

Is it important to burp a baby?

Is it more common for bottle-fed babies to have wind troubles?

The first few moths of parenting are full of anxieties. As a first time parent, you do not want to make a mistake. To am experienced mother, burping is nothing to worry about, but many first time mothers, including me, find it difficult to burp baby after feeding.

Burping a Baby

What is a burp? Why does one need to burp baby?

When a baby feeds, she also takes in some air along with the milk. This is the same as how adults take in air with food when they eat too fast or with their mouth open. The wind gets stuck in the food pipe or oesophagus and is relieved in the form of burp.

This wind or swallowed up air can cause discomfort to baby and can also be a cause of colic. To relieve any air trapped in baby’s passages, one should burp the baby during and after every feed. Here we will discuss the right way to burp a baby and benefits of doing so.

What is the right way to burp a baby after feeding?

Why is it important to burp a baby?

When a baby sucks on breast or nipple to feed, she also swallows some amount of air, which can make baby feel uncomfortable and full which means she will not feed enough. Burping is the process to gently dislodge the excess air and bring it up, so baby can feel comfortable and have more milk comfortably.

If your baby has a problem of acid reflux or GERD, then it is important that you burp your baby  often during a feed.

Is it more common for bottle-fed babies to have wind troubles?

Yes, it is more common because bottle do have air in them, while breasts will not have any air. Still even breastfed babies swallow some amount of air while feeding. Ensure that baby does not keep sucking on an empty bottle to avoid too much air getting sucked.

Also remember that not every baby burps after every feeding. Some babies may burp quite often while others may not burp as frequently.

When should you burp your baby?

Ideally you should burp your baby as soon as she finishes feeding. This may also bring back some amount of milk or spit up. This is normal.  Do not worry as long as it is only a small amount and baby is not vomiting. See spit up vs. vomiting. Put a cloth on your shoulder to save your clothes when this happens.

If your baby seems fussy or uncomfortable while feeding, you may burp the baby and then settle her again to feed. If you breastfeed, you may burp once after she finishes feeding from one breast then put her to other one and  burp again when is done.

What is the right way to burp baby?

There are more than one ways of burping a baby. Not every baby burps in every position, so you should choose what works for you and your baby.

Burp baby on the shoulder/ upright position to burp a baby

This is perhaps the most common position to burp a baby. Hold baby against your shoulder with one hand and use the other hand to gently pat or rub the back to get a burp out.

Burp baby face down on your lap

Gently lay the baby on your lap supporting her head so that it higher than the body and stomach is gently pressured against your lap or legs.

Burp baby sitting on your lap

Sit the baby down on your lap supporting the head and gently rub or pat the back.

In all these positions make sure that baby’s head is well-supported and it does not flop down or back.

How long should one try to get a burp from baby?

A burp may come within few seconds of your rubbing baby’s back or it may take several minutes. If baby does not burp straightaway, you may continue up to ten minutes.

What if a burp does not come?

Most babies will reward you with a burp within a few seconds to a few minutes of patting.

If a burp does not come by ten minutes of your trying, it may mean that baby did not swallow much air and you could stop trying.

Cord Blood Banking

Cord blood banking – reasons and benefits

Source : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umbilical_cord

What is Cord Blood?

Cord blood or umbilical cord blood is the blood remaining in the placenta and umbilical cord of a baby after birth.

After baby’s birth, the umbilical cord is cut and a portion of the umbilical cord is still attached to the placenta. This still contains some blood, which is not needed by the baby anymore. This blood is collected and is known as umbilical cord blood or cord blood. It is also known as placental blood.

How is it different from other blood?

Other than the normal elements like red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma and platelets, cord blood is also rich in stem cells. Stem cells are cells which can regenerate and have no specific properties. These cells can divide and produce more stem cells and have the ability to form tissue and act as building blocks for various organs of body. This is the reason that cord blood can be used for transplantation.

Since cord blood can produce new cells like bone marrow, there have been numerous experiments to use cord blood in place of bone marrow. It has been used for transplant in patients with critical blood and immune system diseases.

What is Cord blood banking?

Cord blood banking or cord cell baking is the process of storing the cord blood collected immediately after birth in sterile conditions for many years and can be used to cure genetic and other chronic diseases like cancers.

A cord blood bank is a facility which stores umbilical cord blood for future use. There are many public and private cord blood banks which provide this facility.

Why should one save cord blood?

Cord blood has stem cells which have the ability to self-regenerate and can be used in treatment of diseases and genetic disorders. This blood is kept in sterile condition in stem cell banks and can be used for not only the donator but siblings and close family to a certain extent.

What is the process of cod blood collection? What are the risks of this process?

Cord blood collection is an easy process and without any risks to the newborn baby. It is a simple process and is completely safe.

Can you overfeed a bottle fed baby?

Can you overfeed a bottle fed baby?

Can you overfeed a bottle fed baby – Yes, it is possible to sometimes overfeed a formula-fed  baby by an over-enthusiastic or anxious parent.

Unlike in breastfeeding where baby controls the amount and time, bottle is controlled by parents or caregivers. It is quite tempting to give a bottle to a crying baby even if the baby has been fed only some time ago.

Babies love to suck and it is very easy for them to ingest more than they want or need from a bottle. In India especially, baby’s weight is unfortunately linked to baby’s health. So, every parent wants a chubby, roly-poly baby and they get stressed if baby is lean or does not seem to be having as much milk as they think s/he should have.

It is important to remember that there is a big range of normal and babies come in all sizes which depends on many factors. If you are worried about your baby’s weight, use our weight and height growth chart tracker to find if your baby is growing well.

Can you overfeed a bottle-fed baby?

How to know if baby is getting overfed ?

Most often if you see that your baby vomits after a feed, it could mean that baby has taken more than needed. A little spitting up is normal but vomiting is stronger.

See difference between spitting up and vomiting.

Signs that you are perhaps overfeeding your baby?

  • Vomiting by baby after every feed could signify that you are perhaps overfeeding the baby.
  • More than eight heavily soiled nappies in a day
  • Frequent bad-smelling poopy diapers
  • Too much gas/ flatulence

Should you follow the instructions given on Formula pack blindly ?

Instructions on formula pack are guidelines to help you but every baby is different and if you baby wants to feed more than recommended amount at a longer gap, so be it. Similarly if baby wants to feed less but more frequently that is alright too. Baby’s doctor will let you know if something is amiss. As long as baby is gaining weight and growing well, there is usually nothing to worry about.

How to avoid overfeeding ?

Think about it how you like to eat food when you are hungry and do not want when you are not. Babies are tuned to their bodies and they will let you know when they hungry or not.

If your baby turns away from the bottle, stop. Do not pack in too much formula in a bottle. If your baby finishes the given amount and still seems hungry, add a little more. You will soon have a rough idea how much formula is enough for your baby and how frequently s/he needs to feed.

Resist the temptation to give a bottle every time baby cries. If the baby has been fed recently, check if there is some other problem like a wet diaper or s/he may be too hot or cold.

Sometimes baby might just crave for your company. Hold the baby and do your favourite things to make her happy.

Is my bottle-fed baby getting enough formula?

Introducing formula to an exclusively breastfed baby

Relacatation : Going back to Breastfeeding after Formula Feeding

Is going back to breastfeeding after formula feeding possible?

I had to supplement breastfeeding my 3 months old with formula for last 1 month due to some problem. I now want to breastfeed exclusively. Is it possible?

Relactation: Going back to breastfeeding after breastfeeding

Going back to breastfeeding after formula feeding is definitely possible but may not be easy. The process of rebuilding milk supply after breastfeeding has been stopped for some time is known as relactation.

Good thing is that you have breastfed your baby for first 2 months. Depending on how often and how much you supplemented with formula, going back to breastfeeding after formula will be an easy to not so easy process. If the supplementing was only a feed in a day or so. It may not have affected your breast milk supply too badly and you may just need to offer breast in place of bottle from now on.

Important thing is to understand how the body produces milk. Milk production is a mother’s body is directly related to how much milk is being consumed. So, if you want your body to produce more milk, you must empty your breasts more often either by feeding the baby or by pumping and storing the milk. It is not going to be easy and may take several days and it will certainly require persistence.

If the amount of formula replaced many breastfeeding sessions, it may take longer and could be a slow process.

Keep in mind below points to make it a smooth transition from bottle to exclusive breastfeeding:

Be patient

Accept the fact that the process will take time and do not expect miracles. Remember that start will be slow and once your baby has started accepting the breast and your milk supply is restored, progress will be much faster. It may take several weeks for your milk supply to restore completely.

Do not stress

Stressing over how much or less milk your breasts are producing will not help.  Infact, studies have shown that stress may affect the milk production adversely. Once you have accepted the fact that the process of relactation takes time, you will be more relaxed and your body will respond to stimuli better.

Keep at it

Persistence is the key when it comes to relactation. It will be tough few days at first but must provide as much stimulation to your breasts as possible. So offer your baby the breast first whenever she is hungry and only after some time if baby is still not satiated offer the bottle.

You may also keep pumping every hour or so to stimulate the breasts to produce more milk. The body increases production of milk to meet higher demand, so it is more stimulation will send signal that more milk in required.

Try different positions to help baby latch

If your baby has become used to feeding from a bottle, s/he may have trouble while going back to breastfeeding. Feeding from a bottle is much easier as they don’t really have to work as hard as when breastfeeding. So, be prepared for a few failures the first few times you offer breast after a break.

If you feel that your baby is having trouble latching on, then try different latching positions. You could also try feeding lying down or in a easy-chair.

breastfeeding positions

Make it easy for the baby

Baby may not be comfortable sucking from breasts after having it easy with the bottle. If your baby is rooting, but not able to suck, make it a little easy for baby. Try expressing a little milk before offering it to baby. If baby gets the milk initially without much effort, s/he may work harder to suck further.

Keep an eye on baby’s intake by these tips to see if your baby is getting enough breastmilk

Take help of a professional

If all these tips do not seem to work and you are too anxious, do not hesitate to consult a lactation expert. The doctor will counsel you about the breastfeeding process and also guide you about how to counter problems you are facing.

Try foods known to increase breast milk

There are many foods which are known to increase breastmilk supply naturally. You may try those other than checking with your doctor for medicinal supplements to increase breastmilk supply.

Some foods which increase location are:

  1. Fenugreek seeds
  2. Sago (sabudana)
  3. Oatmeal
  4. Bottle gourd
  5. Garlic
  6. Ghee
  7. Milk
  8. Drum sticks
  9. Poppy seeds
  10. Almonds

Also drink plenty of water every day. Avoid having too much tea or coffee.
